Hello REFORMA-Tucson and interested LIS professionals and students!

REFORMA-Tucson and Knowledge River (UA-SIRLS) are hosting an All-Arizona REFORMA meeting to discuss better ways to engage throughout the state. Following the meeting, we will host a social mixer for library professionals and students starting the new academic year! We look forward to all interested, whether members of REFORMA or Knowledge River or not, joining us for this fun and social event!

Date: Saturday, August 21, 2001
Time: 6-9pm
Location: Adriana & Joseph McCleer’s Home (2804 E. Adams St, near Speedway and Country Club)

REFORMA-Tucson and Knowledge River will provide hors d’oeuvres and drinks, but encourage REFORMA-Tucson members to bring a small dish to share.

Additionally, we strongly encourage all REFORMA members to bring 1-2 non-members to enjoy a social evening and meet REFORMA members from across the State. Please forward invitation to library colleagues who might be interested in joining us.

Hello REFORMA-Tucson:

As the new Chapter President, I wanted to thank Elizabeth Soltero in addition to all the very active members for the great work you all did this year! I look forward to a great new year of bolstering our presence in Tucson and Arizona, highlighting the needs of Latinos and the Spanish-speaking in our libraries and creating positive information change in our communities.

I would also like to congratulate the other new Chapter Officers:
Vice President: Diana Olivares
Treasurer: Donie Gignac
Secretary: Adriana McCleer

Although we are not having an official Chapter Meeting this month, we will be having a Scholarship Committee Meeting to discuss the details of the REFORMA-Tucson Scholarship this Thursday, July 8 at 5:30 pm at the Santa Rosa Branch Library (1075 S. 10th Ave. Google map).

Our next Chapter Meeting will be Thursday, August 12 at the SIRLS Multipurpose Room at the UA. I am also proposing an All-Arizona REFORMA and Knowledge River Mixer and Membership Drive for Saturday, August 21 in Tucson to discuss how to collaborate with like-minded library professionals throughout Arizona, welcome the new KR cohort and increase our membership in Tucson and in Arizona.

I wanted to highlight some of the important proposals we have been discussing:

- Guest speaker, Maya Castillo spoke about a Voter Registration Effort through “Mi Familia Vota.” If you are interested in voter registration drives, please contact her at Maya.Castillo@seiu5az.org

- The LiSLaS Conference was a success and the money raised has allowed us to start our Scholarship. The Scholarship will begin meeting to develop criteria for awarding/receiving the funds.

- We will begin greater collaboration not only with the Central AZ REFORMA Chapter and Arizona National Members through opening our meetings via virtual attendance and All-Arizona REFORMA projects but we are also looking to collaborate with other ethnic library groups, such as AILA and the Black Caucus. We will be discussing this further in our August meeting.

- REFORMA-Tucson will be setting up online membership and payment forms.

Special Session added to the LiSLaS Conference (Fri June 4, 2010)

We have added the following session to our great line-up of workshops and panels dealing with the newest immigration and anti-ethnic studies in the State of Arizona. Representatives from the University of Arizona and Tucson Unified School District will speak about the laws and the impacts it will have on librarianship, education and equal access to information. We hope to have a great discussion on how these laws will affect our profession.

Workshop 6: SB 1070, HB 2281 and Librarianship in Arizona

Presenters: Roberto “Dr. Cintli” Rodriguez (UA Mexican American-Raza Studies Professor), Darlane Santa Cruz (UA Graduate Student), Sean Arce (Director of TUSD Mexican American Studies) & Kim Dominguez (Pima College Student/Social Justice Education Project Coordinator). Moderated by Elizabeth Soltero, REFORMA-Tucson President.

Description: UA and TUSD representatives will speak about current Arizona legislation SB1070 and HB2281. This discussion will focus on the impact of these laws on librarianship, education and equal access to information. Question and discussion will be moderated.

REFORMA-Tucson Quilt Fundraiser

Hello REFORMA Tucson,

As a fundraiser, we are raffling off a beautiful 8ft x 8ft quilt! Valued at $1,000.00!

Proceeds from this quilt raffle will fund library student scholarships & literary events held within the local Tucson community such as our one day workshop conference, “Library Services for Latino and Spanish-speaking Patrons”.

The quilt drawing will take place on Wednesday, April 28th, 3:00pm at the Día de los niños/Día de los libros event held at the Valencia Library Branch. (Winner does not need to be present)

Tickets are $7 or 3 for $15

Liberty Partnership’s Book Drive – LP is collecting new or gently used books for students and their families of the Southside community. They will distribute these books to families in an effort to raise awareness on the importance of READING! Bring your donated books to our next chapter meeting. On behalf of REFORMA Tucson I would like to congratulate Jessica, Adriana, & Jeff for being the recipient of leaderships awards! Thank you for all your contributions to our chapter and in the community.

Our percentage night at El Charro to raise funds for library student scholarships was a success & lots of fun!!!

We raised $472 on raffle tickets and we will get 20% of funds from the dinner which is $150. Our combined efforts raised $622! Thank you all for your help, contributing raffle items, selling tickets, attending, & spreading the word! Congratulations!

Hello REFORMA Tucson,

The KR Mixer held at Patti Overall’s home was a success. Everyone enjoyed getting to know & getting reacquainted with each other. The food & sangria were delicious! Thank you Patti for opening your home to us! Welcome Sandy & new KR & SIRLS Students!

The José Galvez presentation and reception was very nice, we had about 50 people attend! Mona, thank you for connecting REFORMA & José.

One Day Conference: Members, Jeffery Cruz & Jessica Hernandez are the chairs for the REFORMA Tucson fundraising committee and they have been sharing and collecting ideas to raise funds for our chapter to support our chapter’s efforts to support library students with scholarships. They have begun to plan a one day conference tentatively named Library Services for Latino and Spanish-speaking Patrons. The vision is similar to OC REFORMA’s conference therefore some of the topics in the survey are included. As of now we have focused on Southern Arizona rural libraries but we will expand. This is a great opportunity for our chapter to provide professional development opportunities & engage in conversation on how to better serve our communities. Please share your thoughts (Possible speakers, SIRLS, UA, PCPL, etc) on this and fill out the following survey.
